What is the Massachusetts General Hospital Center for Biomarkers in Imaging?

The Massachusetts General Hospital Center for Biomarkers in Imaging is an academic, non-profit organization dedicated to the identification, characterization and validation of biomarkers. Founded in April 2001, the Center is based within the Department of Radiology at the Massachusetts General Hospital. Located in downtown Boston, the hospital is a major teaching affiliate of the Harvard Medical School.

How does the Center promote the use of imaging-based biomarkers?

The Center undertakes a number of activities to foster the use of biomarkers by the FDA, industry and beyond. These include:
  1. Maintaining a searchable, web-based catalog of biomarkers available at the Massachusetts General Hospital and the greater academic community;

  2. Validating the use of specific biomarkers through literature searches and clinical research;

  3. Educating the FDA, industry, and other interested parties on the vast potential of biomarkers through sponsorship of scholarly meetings and site-visits;

  4. Facilitating and coordinating research in biomarkers in imaging.

What services does the Center offer?

In addition to our web-based catalog of biomarkers, CBI provides a variety of services for the FDA, industry, and research. These include:

1) Biomarker validation for pre-clinical and clinical applications
2) Biomarker consulting
3) Clinical trial design
4) Confirmation of subject phenotype using biomarkers
5) Facilitation/conduct of clinical trials
6) Core laboratory services
7) Research portfolio assessment
8) Focused biomarker education

How does the Center affect existing or potential interactions between stakeholders and biomarker investigators?

The Center is intended to facilitate the exchange of biomarker-related information between investigators and the regulatory, pharmaceutical, and academic communities. We do not interfere with existing or potential relationships between stakeholders and investigators; in fact, we encourage them. The Center adds value to these relationships by providing a range of biomarker-related services, a context in which to place specific imaging tools or techniques, and access to a broad range of expertise in a variety of related fields.
