BIOMARKER CONSULTATION

Effective and efficient use of biomarkers in imaging requires the application of sound science to both identify and validate potential biomarkers. Beyond good science, practical imaging experience is crucial to appropriately applying imaging biomarkers to defined pre-clinical and clinical questions.

The MGH Center for Biomarkers in Imaging, built on extensive resources of the Massachusetts General Hospital Department of Radiology possess both the scientific knowledge and clinical experience to successfully apply biomarkers in imaging to pre-clinical and clinical trials. MGH Radiology leads the nation in extramural research funding, including grants from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and other competitive sources, receiving over $45 million in awards for the fiscal year 2002. The Department is also a leader in conducting industry-sponsored research in the pre-clinical and clinical settings. Finally, the Department provides a wide array of patient-care imaging services, performing over 550,000 patient examinations a year.

The MGH radiologists, scientists, and physicists that make these achievements possible are available as consultants to government, academia, and industry through the MGH Center for Biomarkers in Imaging. The Center offers a convenient, common entry point to outside parties seeking the imaging biomarkers expertise of MGH Radiology and beyond. Center staff matches the biomarker needs of government and industry and academia with leading MGH investigators, establishing consulting agreements and administering administrative details of contractual arrangements. In addition, the Center oversees the quality of work product, ensuring that consulting agreements meet or exceed client expectations.

MGH Center for Biomarkers in Imaging consulting arrangements are available in a broad range of modalities and techniques, covering the vast majority of disease states. Areas of particular competence are outlined in our Biomarkers Catalog. Additional focus areas parallel the research and clinical interests of the various divisions and laboratories of the MGH Department of Radiology.
